Secondary biosolids digestion

SEAD treatability of secondary biosolids from the upflow anaerobic bioreactors of Anheuser-Busch

PI: Lars Angenent

Anaerobic treatment of high-strength wastewater is an attractive treatment strategy, because a large quantity of methane (and thus energy) can be produced from the high levels of soluble organic material. In addition to treating the soluble fraction of the wastewater, anaerobic digesters can also treat the solids fraction - albeit this must be done in digesters with a longer hydraulic and solids residence time and a larger shear rate compared to digesters that were designed for soluble compounds. Treating secondary biosolids by anaerobic digestion increases the bioenergy yields considerably.
